I'll probably just stick with XMplay and VLC. It's a shame but I don't think that I really have any pressing need for SongBird beyond the iPod support.

Bang goes that portable dream up in smoke. To my utter dismay I discovered that Songbird was pretty much forced to drop support for iPods because it doesn't fit in with Apple's world domination plans. I figured that Apple had probably decided to loosen their death grip of MP3/media world, but boy was I wrong. I recently purchased my other half a cool little iPod Nano, and was looking forward to using (portable) SongBird to sync music with it. If I had to get permission from it everytime I wanted to turn on the radio, and it was from a Space Odyssey 2001, it probably wouldn't let me do that either. I've never liked iTunes it's messes with your MP3s, creates dupliates, it fails to acknowledge that you might actually have more than one computer in your household and it generally works very hard to prevent me from doing perfectly legitimate things with my media. More specifically iTunes and Apple's whole MP3 world domination plan.

Cached is Windows fills unused physical ram with things you might need next, it's deleted as soon as an app needs it and can usually be ignored (unless it's broken). In keeping with anti Microsoft, and of late anti Google sentiment, I officially despise Apple. It means you have 32GB of physical ram and 33GB total address space (physical ram + pagefile) 22.3GB is reserved by apps (committed) but they're actually only using 12.8GB of your physical ram (10GB reserved by apps but not used).

I'd try putting your pagefile back to system managed, or at least make it 10GB+, and see what happens. The pagefile won't be thrashed unless you actually overflow the ram, most of the time it will just hold address space that's reserved but not actually used. Windows will increase or reduce the pagefile as needed and apps that reserve more memory than they actually use won't grind you to a halt.

If you leave your pagefile system managed you don't have to worry at all about reserved (committed), only the actual use. Once your reserved (committed) equals your total address space you've had it. If you lock the pagefile small there's no overflow for Windows to map the memory that apps reserve but don't use. The important thing here is won't actually use, but must be given address space. It's designed to work with a pagefile, what should happen is Windows knows that apps will reserve (commit) more than they use, instead of giving apps valuable ram that they won't ever actually use it will give them pagefile that they won't actually ever use.

With what you've shown above, 12.8GB used and 22.3GB committed, it looks like you have 20GB free ram but really you've only got 10GB free. Cached is Windows fills unused physical ram with things you might need next, it's deleted as soon as an app needs it and can usually be ignored (unless it's broken).Īpplications reserve (commit) memory and then use it, when an application reserves an amount of memory it has to be mapped into your total address space (physical ram + pagefile), it doesn't matter if it won't use it all, if it reserves (commits) some amount it has to be mapped or you'll get warnings/slowdowns while Windows panics and tries to free up address space.
